I've had the Kodak Zi8 since early this month and I rate it 4 stars.
The things that I dislike about the Zi8. Needs a mini tripod to stand on it's own. Internal mic doesn't sound great outdoors, too much wind noise. No flash for indoor stills.
Things I like about the Zi8. It has a mic input. WVGA mode 848 by 480 and 720p @ 60 fps. Records while plugged into the outlet without using batteries. Very portable and easy to use. Accepts SDHC cards.
Improvements:It would be great if the settings I currently have are saved so when I turn it back on again, it would still be on those settings or save multiple settings. (edit: settings are saved except for mic gain setting) It would be also good if it were able to turn off the red light during recording and the snap sound while taking stills.
Notes: Since the image stabilization is not that great (didn't expect it to be) I record video by attaching a mini tripod to it and grasp the tripod legs for more stability while shooting. I use the Sony EMC-DS30P microphone along with the Zi8 to produce better sound. It also came with a wind screen. I ordered on Amazon for 30 or so dollars. I also have a small bag/case that fits my mini tripod, extra battery, Sony mic, Zi8 and a compact Canon digi cam for my stills. Also I got the 3 dollar "back up" battery here on Amazon. Arcsoft or whatever software that comes with it is okay but nothing to write home about. I just drag the files from my Zi8 to my computer then use Cyberlink's PowerDirector 8 to edit video and upload straight to youtube! I got the black Zi8 but I really wanted the raspberry one. All in all it is a great inexpensive video camera that takes nice video and great sound (from external mic) but does not replace my small point and shoot cam for stills. It doesn't matter much now since my carrying case can house both. My 2nd choice would be the Vado HD. kodak zi8 coverage
